Understanding Instagram Post Shares
Directly seeing a comprehensive list of every individual who shared your Instagram post, particularly via Direct Message (DM), is generally not possible due to Instagram's privacy policies. However, there are ways to get some information, especially for shares to Stories and through account insights.
Shares to Instagram Stories
- If You're Tagged: When someone shares your feed post to their Instagram Story and tags your account (@mention), you will receive a notification. You can then tap on this notification to view their Story and see the share. This is the most direct way to know who shared your post to their Story.
- If You're Not Tagged (Public Accounts & Reshares): If your post is shared to a public Story by a public account without tagging you, it's more difficult to track. For Business or Creator accounts, Instagram Insights may sometimes show a section for "Reshares" if your post is added to public Stories, allowing you to see some of these public reshares, but not necessarily all of them or by whom if they didn't tag you.
Using Instagram Insights (Business or Creator Accounts)
If you have an Instagram Business or Creator account, you have access to post insights which provide some data on shares:
- Navigate to the specific post on your profile.
- Tap "View Insights" located below the post (you might need to tap the post image first on some layouts).
- In the insights panel, look for a metric typically labeled "Shares" or sometimes detailed under "Post Interactions." This number indicates how many times your post has been shared.
- This "Shares" count often includes both shares to Stories and shares via Direct Messages.
- Important Clarification: While insights provide the total number of shares (including those via DM), Instagram does not provide a list of individual users who shared your post via Direct Message. For Story shares, as mentioned, you might see an aggregated count or some examples of public reshares if available in your insights, but not a complete user-by-user breakdown unless they tagged you.
Limitations for Personal Accounts
Personal Instagram accounts have more limited analytics. Your primary way to know if your post was shared to someone's Story is if they explicitly tag your account in their Story.

Key Considerations
- Privacy for DM Shares: Instagram prioritizes user privacy for Direct Messages. You will not be able to see a list of users who shared your post directly with others via DM.
- Focus on Trends: While you can't see every single sharer, a high number of shares in your insights is a strong indicator that your content is resonating with your audience and being distributed.
